Wyckoff Colonial
Wyckoff Colonial is a digitization of the Roman or “Colonial” alphabet drawn by J. W. Wyckoff for The Manual of Monumental Lettering. The caption describes it as a sixteenth-century Roman letter of the kind used on American Colonial headstones (LM p.146). It is a capitals-and-figures face with modest bracketed serifs and an informal, hand-drawn warmth, closer to a carved letter than to a printing type.
Font binaries and rendered specimens are excluded pending redistribution review. This page records the private reconstruction without offering a production-ready font.
How it was made
Section titled “How it was made”Wyckoff drew his alphabet as outlines. Each letter was scanned at full resolution, its outline sealed where the scanned printing had broken, filled solid with the counters kept open, traced to curves and assembled into a font.
Status
Section titled “Status”- Version 0.1, proof of concept. Covers A–Z and 0–9, plus period, hyphen and middle dot. Lowercase keys type capitals.
- Not yet done: kerning, an optical spacing pass, comma, apostrophe and ampersand, and smoothing of a few rough serifs.
- Font access: the private font files remain outside this repository pending source and redistribution review.
The later private POC 02 revision preserves the traced designs while adding a visible missing-glyph frame and correcting metadata. It does not complete kerning or optical spacing. See the collection catalog for the other studies.
